Rating's trousers: "slops" worn by sailors or in penal colonies.
The "ratings" showed the level of the sailors, from lowesr rank
to highest, usings designs at the end of sleeves, shoulder, etc.
and on hats. Often black or gold bands, etc. Shorter trousers
made work easier, to avoid rolling up trousers, rating trousers
were designed to be short. As these trousers were worn by many
of the lower ranked sailors, they identified sailors. Soon the
gentry began to wear trousers too, as they were convenient and
comfortable.
